Lecture 8: Pattern Formation II

Pattern Formation II

In this lecture we discussed important mechanism for pattern formation in natural systems. We continued the discussion on

  • the voter model
  • and the majority model

and continued to discuss how spatial patterns can be stabilized by the mechanism of local excitation and long range inhibition which we discussed with the explorable “Keith Haring's Mexican Hat”.

We then talked about different model types for the description of pattern forming systems:

  • lattice models
  • reaction diffusion models

and discussed when each one of the models can be used.
